CEO Reaches 30 Years at The Trust

Congratulations to our CEO, Margaret Bowen on your 30 years at The Disability Trust! Margaret has led The Trust to great success over the past 30 years. Starting out with the Trust in 1987 when it’s earliest role was in developing and bringing together local services in the Illawarra and advocating for more effective ways to meet community needs.

The Trust has grown and become more diverse but has retained its connection with people with disabilities and their families and has continued to place a client-focused ethos at the heart of its operations.

Through Margaret’s Leadership during the 1980’s and 1990s The Trust provided services from Attendant Care Programs, Post School Options, employment services and many more innovative programs, designed to support people with disabilities. All of these services represented significantly new service types at the time and were a prelude to programs that are ongoing at The Trust today.

More recently Margaret has steered the organisation through some significant changes to the disability sector with the roll out of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). The Disability Trust has lobbied hard for the NDIS and is ready to meet the needs of both current and future service users. It is the vision of The Disability Trust to build on the strengths afforded by our local connections and partnerships with people with disabilities, their families and friends. We are committed to continuing to explore ways to enhance the lives of people with disabilities and to seeking ways to create a more inclusive world through the roll out of the NDIS.

Without the strong leadership and commitment of Margaret to The Disability Trust and the sector the organisation would not be the dynamic, innovative, adaptable and trustworthy as it is today. Margaret celebrated today with some of her many colleagues with cake and a glass of champagne.

Congratulations once again Margaret what a brilliant achievement.

E-Year in Review

Wow! What a year of change! While we knew that this year would be critically important in terms of getting the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) ready I think it is only in retrospect that we can see clearly the amount of progress we have made that pleasingly sees us in a position of strength and confidence closing out the year.

If you would like to know more about the year we have had check out our Year in Review

Thomas Butler – Winner Excellence in Indigenous Programs

The Disability Trust would like to congratulate Thomas Butler on winning the NDS award for Excellence in Indigenous Programs.

Thomas is an Aboriginal Elder who has developed a culture group mentorship and support program with The Disability Trust, specifically designed for young indigenous men with a disability. Using a blend of modern and traditional tools and techniques, Thomas assists the young men to develop their everyday life skills as well as providing education about their culture, language and health. In its third year, participants of the program have been able to engage at a deeper level with their own indigenous and non-indigenous communities, building stronger long term relationships and futures. Gifting It Back Christmas Carols in Wollongong

Last Saturday we were fortunate enough to once again be the charity partner for the Gifting It Back Christmas Carols in Wollongong. This event is organised by Aleks, Branka and Zoran Marjanovic and their extended family and friends. It was a fantastic night of Christmas carols bringing our local community together. The night provided the opportunity for our very own Star Dancers & Music Makers to perform their Christmas dances for those who attended the evening which culminated in a huge fireworks display. Over 2,000 attended this year’s event which was hosted by WIN TV’s Geoff Phillips and included superb performances by Prinnie Stevens, Leigh McRae, Trent Bowater and many others. We are already looking forward to next year’s event which will be held on Saturday 2 December. Put it in your diaries now!

Client Christmas Party – Jamberoo Action Park

jamberoo-2016-13On Saturday 3 December, 300 participants, their family and friends from The Disability Trust went to Jamberoo Action Park for our Christmas celebration hosted by the park. CEO Dax Eddy and the team from Jamberoo Action Park did such a great job of looking after everyone on the day, making sure a great experience was had by all who attended. Highlights included the brilliant rides at the park and the BBQ lunch. It was great to see so many participants having lots of fun with their friends and being able to connect with one another outside of their weekly programs. It was also great to catch up with all the families on the day and see their siblings having so much fun together. This has become an annual event for participants from our Sport & Recreation service in the Illawarra and we are deeply appreciative to Jamberoo Action Park for making this end of year celebration possible for our participants and their families.
