A Celebration of Inclusive Rugby League

Shark Park came alive on Thursday, 12 June as the SCORE Sharks and SCORE Dragons faced off in an unforgettable curtain-raiser ahead of the NRL local derby between the Cronulla Sharks and the St George Illawarra Dragons.

Run by The Disability Trust, both teams represent what sport is all about – fun, teamwork, and community – and this match was a celebration of inclusion at its finest.

Experience Meets Enthusiasm

For the SCORE Sharks, the match marked a huge milestone – their official debut after over a year of hard work, training, and participation in local games. They stepped onto the field full of energy and pride, ready to show just how far they’ve come.

The SCORE Dragons brought experience and confidence to the contest, having been part of inclusive league programs for several years. Their teamwork and spirit were on full display, making them tough opponents in a high-energy match.

Unity Beyond the Game

While the action on the field was fierce and fun, the real win was the sense of connection shared by everyone involved. Players from both teams formed a guard of honour as the NRL sides ran out, showcasing what happens when inclusive programs are supported and celebrated by the broader rugby league community.

Some great highlights from the match:

  • The SCORE Dragons took the win in a friendly but competitive showdown.
  • Aden Clarke kicked things off in style by pressing the Sharks’ alarm to announce, “The Sharks are here!”
  • Cooper Travers had the honour of delivering the match ball onto the field before kick-off – a moment he’ll never forget.

Championing Inclusion

The match was a proud moment for The Disability Trust, who continue to work closely with both the Cronulla Sharks and St George Illawarra Dragons to ensure people of all abilities can access opportunities to participate, compete and shine.

“This is what inclusive sport is all about,” said one team member. “It’s not just about playing the game – it’s about belonging, building confidence, and creating unforgettable moments.”

As the SCORE programs grow, so does the impact they have – not only on the players but on the wider community.
