Celebrating Occupational Therapy Week: Supporting Independence and Participation

This Occupational Therapy Week, we’re recognising the incredible impact of our Occupational Therapists who support people to live life their way – building skills, confidence, and connection in everyday activities.

Occupational therapy is about finding practical solutions that help people participate in the things that matter most to them – whether it’s getting around at home, taking part in community life, or pursuing personal interests and goals.

One person who reflects this in action is Craig, a participant from Eurobodalla, whose story shows how thoughtful occupational therapy and the right assistive technology can make a world of difference.

Craig, a leg amputee, recently received a custom 4WD power wheelchair after working closely with our Occupational Therapy team to trial and assess the best option for his needs. This all-terrain chair enables Craig to navigate his property, clear land, and manage household tasks safely and independently – giving him greater control and access to the spaces that are important to him.

Outside of home life, Craig is an accomplished archer, using a manual wheelchair to compete at both state and national levels. His achievements highlight how adaptive equipment and ongoing occupational therapy support can create new opportunities for participation in sport and recreation.

Craig’s story is a great reminder of what Occupational Therapy Week is all about – celebrating the creativity, skill and dedication of OTs who help people overcome barriers, build capacity, and take part in meaningful everyday life.

We extend our thanks to Craig for generously sharing his story and to our Occupational Therapists across The Disability Trust for their commitment to inclusion, independence and innovation.
