Wollongong has just made history, claiming the world’s top cycling honour – the prestigious UCI Bike City Award – and The Disability Trust’s CycleAbility program played a starring role in the win.
The announcement was made at the 2025 UCI Cycling for All & Sustainability Awards in Copenhagen, where Wollongong was recognised for its Community Partners Program – a collaborative grassroots initiative involving more than 25 local organisations working together to make cycling safe, accessible and inclusive.
Led by Destination Wollongong and supported by Wollongong City Council, the program unites cycling clubs, charities, health providers and community groups – including The Disability Trust – to deliver real-world impact through cycling.

The Power of Inclusive Pedals
Among the standout contributors is the CycleAbility program, which gives people of all abilities the chance to experience the joy and freedom of cycling. Through modified bikes, piloted trikes and supportive coaching, participants are riding further, smiling wider, and building confidence.
“The UCI event allowed us to promote inclusive cycling opportunities for our participants,” said Michael Norris, Senior Manager of Community & Groups at The Disability Trust.
“We secured a range of modified bikes that support our participants to ride safely and make the most of our fantastic local cycleways.”
The Community Partners Program beat out finalists from Abu Dhabi and Treviso, Italy, with the winning bid judged by international experts in cycling, mobility and sustainability. The award not only recognises the legacy of the 2022 UCI Road World Championships but affirms Wollongong’s long-term commitment to cycling for everyone.
“This award belongs to the people of Wollongong,” said Jeremy Wilshire, General Manager of Destination Wollongong.
“Our community partners, like The Disability Trust, are the heart of this program. They’ve made cycling safer, more inclusive and more inspiring.”

Program Highlights:
- Launch of an All-Abilities category in the MS Gong Ride
- Piloted trikes for seniors and people with mobility challenges
- Inclusion of Frame Running and accessible cycling events at city festivals
- Creation of the Ride Wollongong Festival of Cycling, now an annual legacy event
- Ongoing input from local organisations into future cycling infrastructure
“This shows that the UCI legacy is alive and well in Wollongong,” said Lord Mayor Cr Tania Brown.
“We’re building a culture where cycling is for everyone – as a sport, as a way to connect, and as a way to move through life.”
