Dreams come true at Jammers

By DYLAN BROWN

The Jammers are an ability inclusive basketball team which has been up and running for more than two decades where “dreams come true”.

Tim is one of the enthusiastic players in the two all-ages Jammers teams and he has been able to progress to the representative ranks at state and national level in the sport he loves.

He loves having the opportunity to play with people of differing abilities.

“Dreams could come true” is how he sums up his experience with the Jammers, resonating the impact that sport can have on so many lives, including his.

The Jammers program is one of the more social ventures under The Disability Trust’s extensive list of Sport and Recreation programs.

There are 40 players participating in the sport in the two Jammers teams who play for 40 weeks every year, meeting up each Saturday to work on their game.

This sporting experience adds to their fitness and teamwork while also allowing them to learn invaluable social skills.

They improve their hand-eye coordination abilities and learn the importance of good sportsmanship.

All in all, the Jammers program is a successful way of enriching the lives of all the people involved, including the staff members, who coach the team.

Some of the more experienced players assist the coaches in facilitating the group activity.

The Jammers also get a helping hand with regular visits from Illawarra Hawks NBL players who often participate in the training program to pass on tips and techniques on how to improve on the basketball court.
