Joel’s Indigenous art enriches Mountview garden

Joel is a proud young Dharawal man who is bringing his talent for Indigenous art to the Trusted Garden Program at Mountview.

He has been on a journey of self-discovery to find out more about his heritage and part of that has been learning about traditional painting styles, which he started six years ago at school.

The story behind his artwork involves gathering, coming together and helping each other. 

He has made over 15 pieces of art, including a boomerang, clap sticks (a musical instrument) and yarning sticks, which are communication tools that are passed around to support, empower and respect one another.

Joel has passed on a lot of knowledge to the garden group about traditional uses for materials.

He says he “really enjoys” creating artworks and would love to sell them to the general public in the future.

His artwork is featured throughout the Mountview garden at Balgownie, adding to the pleasant environment which is enjoyed by the residents of the five-bedroom home which specialises in providing stays for adults with disability.
