Living Life His Way: James’ Journey

For James, each week is built with intention – full of purpose, choice, and connection. And at the heart of it all is a dedicated team that truly understands what it means to support someone to live life their way.

James actively accesses a wide range of supports through The Disability Trust – including community access, supported employment, sport and recreation, and independent living. Thanks to a coordinated and personalised approach, every part of his week aligns with his interests, goals, and daily routines.

“We’re very fortunate,” says James’ dad, David. “All of James’ activities are organised through The Trust. It gives us great confidence knowing that he’s supported by people who genuinely care about his wellbeing.”

Behind the scenes, team members like Jade keep everything on track – managing James’ schedule, making adjustments as needed, and ensuring no detail is overlooked. This thoughtful and consistent support lays the foundation for a fulfilling, well-balanced life.

Whether it’s basketball, tennis, go-karting, or plane spotting at the airport, James’ weekly schedule is as diverse as it is engaging.

“He’s been part of our Sport & Rec programs for over 10 years,” says Linzi, a Sport and Recreation Officer. “He’s made great friendships, developed new skills, and continues to grow in confidence. Seeing him laugh and enjoy time with his mates – that’s what it’s all about.”

But the commitment from The Disability Trust goes beyond just planning activities. Every staff member receives specialised training to deliver safe, high-quality, person-centred support.

“The training helps us do our job safely and effectively,” explains Molly, one of James’ support workers. “But more than that – I genuinely enjoy spending time with James. We have a lot of fun together. It’s the perfect way to spend an afternoon.”

For Regional Manager Michael, it’s the spirit of collaboration that makes all the difference.

“There’s a genuine sense of care,” he says. “Everyone works together to ensure James is supported to achieve his goals. It’s not just about ticking boxes – it’s about helping people live the lives they choose.”

And James? He’s doing exactly that – living a life filled with adventure, connection, and choice, surrounded by the right supports by his side.
