The Kiama Pavilion was overflowing with excitement on Saturday 8 August as families, friends and community members gathered for the much-anticipated annual Music Makers Concert.
Music Makers is a Sport & Recreation program of The Disability Trust, providing inclusive opportunities for people with disability to participate in dance, drama and performance. The concert is a highlight of the year, showcasing participants’ talent, collective growth and achievements.
With audience members queuing before the doors opened to secure the best seats in the house, the atmosphere was electric as performers prepared to take to the stage after months of rehearsals and hard work.
An inclusive program, that builds confidence and connection
Manager Sport & Recreation Services Melissa Hurley said the concert was a wonderful celebration of the participants’ dedication and achievements.
“The annual Music Makers Concert is much more than a performance. It’s an opportunity for our participants to build confidence, develop friendships and showcase their talents in front of a supportive community,” Ms Hurley said.
“The pride on the performers’ faces as they stepped onto the stage was incredible to see. Their commitment over the past few months really shone through in every performance.”
Months of preparation and community spirit shines on stage
The Music Makers participants delivered nine spectacular dance routines throughout the evening, including a crowd-favourite tap performance that brought enthusiastic applause from the audience.
A costume change for every routine added colour and excitement to the production, while the performers’ energy and enthusiasm never faltered.
For many, the highlight of the evening was watching the Music Makers performers take centre stage and demonstrate the skills they have developed through the program.
“Every performer had an opportunity to shine, and that’s what makes this event so special,” Ms Hurley said.
“The concert celebrates ability, achievement and inclusion, and it’s always inspiring to see the overwhelming support our performers receive from family, friends and the wider community.”
The evening also featured a fantastic lineup of guest performers from across the Illawarra, including dancers, singers and a ventriloquist.
Audience members joined in the fun throughout the night, taking part in a lively pub choir singalong and line-dancing routine that had people on their feet.
An event made possible by volunteers and families
The event was coordinated by Sport & Recreation Services in partnership with a dedicated volunteer crew that has generously contributed its time, skills and resources to the Music Makers program for the past 17 years.
Council extends its sincere thanks to the Tierney, Hurley, Farrugia, Sciascia and Higgins families for their ongoing generosity and commitment to ensuring the Music Makers production continues to thrive year after year.
The success of the concert was also made possible by the continued support of Music Makers parents, who volunteered their time and donated prizes for the silent auction.
Their contributions play an important role in fundraising efforts that help provide ongoing performance opportunities for participants.
A special thank you also goes to the staff at Edney Lane for supporting the production through the purchase of raffle tickets and chocolates. Congratulations to Bec Parnis, who was the lucky winner of second prize in the raffle.
Ms Hurley said events like the annual concert would not be possible without the dedication of volunteers, families and supporters working behind the scenes.
“It truly takes a community to bring an event like this to life. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who contributes their time, resources and enthusiasm to support Music Makers and our performers.”
