A guide to the SIL registration changes

What is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is a NDIS-funded support designed for people who need significant assistance with everyday activities in a home space.

SIL may include support with:

• Personal care
• Cooking and meal preparation
• Household tasks
• Building daily living skills
• Medication management
• Community participation
• Safety and supervision

The goal of SIL is to help people live as independently as possible while receiving the support they need.

Why are the rules changing?

The SIL registration changes are part of broader NDIS reforms aimed at improving the quality and safety of disability supports provided in Australia.

The changes are designed to:

• Strengthen quality standards
• Improve participant safeguards
• Increase provider accountability
• Build confidence in SIL services

What should participants, families and support coordinators do?

The NDIS encourages participants to start conversations with their SIL provider as early as possible.

Ask if your SIL provider is already registered:

If they are already registered, there should be no change to your current supports.

If your SIL provider is not registered:

Consider asking:

• Does the provider plan to become registered before 1 October 2026?
• What transition arrangements are in place if registration is not approved?
• What support will be available during any transition period?

You may also wish to explore alternative registered SIL providers.

Key dates

1 July 2026

The new SIL registration requirements came into effect. Providers delivering Supported Independent Living services must now meet, or be transitioning toward meeting the NDIS registration requirements.

1 October 2026

The transition period ends for existing unregistered SIL providers. Providers who wish to continue delivering SIL supports must be registered under the relevant NDIS registration pathway.
