How Project SEARCH is building workplace confidence and creating pathways to open employment – starting at the Novotel.
Project SEARCH is a Pathway to Employment program that supports young people with disability to gain the skills, experience, and confidence needed to move into open employment. Designed for participants aged 17 to 30 with NDIS funding, the program combines classroom learning with hands-on internships in real workplaces, giving participants the tools and opportunities to thrive.
The program runs over nine months and includes three structured work rotations, supported by a dedicated team who provide on-site mentoring, coaching and personalised guidance. Participants learn not only how to do the job, but how to be job-ready – how to communicate in a team, follow routines, build resilience, and navigate real workplace expectations. It’s not about ticking boxes – it’s about building confidence, independence, and a future where employment is meaningful and sustainable.
At the Novotel Wollongong Northbeach, current Project SEARCH participants Kieran and Emily are experiencing just that.

Meet Kieran and Emily
For both Kieran and Emily, starting the program came with excitement, and nerves – as it would for anyone beginning something new. Entering a large, fast-paced workplace like the Novotel was a big step outside their comfort zones. But with the support of their instructors and hotel mentors, those early worries soon gave way to routine, confidence, and pride.
Today, Kieran and Emily are actively contributing to the hotel’s housekeeping operations. They’ve learned to make beds to professional standard, fold towels with precision, clean guest rooms, vacuum, and keep track of stock. More than that, they’ve learned how to work in a team, manage their time, and solve problems on the job.
Kieran says the program has changed how he sees himself. “I used to second-guess everything,” he shares. “Now, I understand that it’s okay to learn as you go. What matters is putting in the effort and being open to feedback. I’ve stopped being so hard on myself.”
He especially enjoys the satisfaction of completing detailed tasks, like folding towels. What might seem like a small job to some has become a moment of pride for him. “When I first started, it took a long time. Now I’ve improved so much. It’s great to look back and see how far I’ve come.”
For Emily, the highlight has been discovering what she can do with the right support and encouragement, making beds has become one of her favourite tasks!
Both interns have found purpose and direction through the structure of the program. They speak positively about the support they receive from staff, the sense of inclusion they feel in the workplace, and the boost in self-belief that’s come from proving to themselves what they’re capable of.
They’re not just completing an internship – they’re preparing for open employment. And while they aren’t officially employed by the Novotel yet, both Kieran and Emily have their sights set on future opportunities within the hotel.
Kieran sums it up best: “Project SEARCH has helped me build real skills, but more importantly, it’s helped me believe I can be part of the workforce. I feel ready now. And I know that even if I make a mistake, I can learn and move forward.”
Why Project SEARCH Works
Project SEARCH isn’t a simulated work environment. It’s the real thing. Participants learn in live workplaces, with real responsibilities and high expectations – just like any other employee. They’re supported every step of the way, but also encouraged to step up, try new things, and push through challenges.
It’s about building independence, one shift at a time.
For families and young people considering the program, Kieran and Emily’s story shows what’s possible when the right support meets the right opportunity. Project SEARCH creates pathways – not just into jobs, but into futures full of choice, contribution, and confidence.
