More than 40 players from the Score Dragons and Score Raiders teams enjoyed the thrill of playing their modified rugby league match in front of a sold-out crowd at Kogarah’s Netstrata Jubilee Stadium last Saturday.
With a bumper crowd of more than 18,000 spectators cheering them on, the teams had a fantastic time being on the field just before the NRL match between St George Illawarra and Canterbury.
The atmosphere was electric with the pro-Dragons crowd creating an awesome environment for the players.
Both teams enjoyed interacting with each other on and off the field with all players displaying great sportsmanship as the Score Dragons ran away with a 20-8 victory.
The Score Dragons had a squad of 25 and there were 18 Score Raiders players so they had plenty of time to cheer their teammates from the sidelines when they were on the interchange bench waiting for their turn.
There were several new players from both teams who were participating in an event like this for the first time and they had a ball.
NRL players from the Dragons and Bulldogs were interacting with the players, cheering on with them, passing the ball around and getting photos.
Players from the Score Dragons and Score Raiders also had the opportunity to form a guard of honour, getting plenty of high fives from the NRL stars as they ran out onto the field.
Score Dragons player Sean McKay had the honour of walking the game ball out onto the field to give to St George Illawarra skipper Ben Hunt which was part of the TV broadcast and a moment he will never forget.
All the feedback from players, parents, families and carers was overwhelmingly positive, thanking The Disability Trust’s Sport and Recreation Team for helping to create this incredible opportunity.
