Switching locations a joy for Jonathon

Jonathon is a 33-year-old with an Intellectual Disability who has been with Workskills Goulburn for several years.

Initially employed by Menzies Property Services as a cleaner, he transitioned to a permanent part-time position with Joss Group when they took over the contract.

Without a driver’s license, Jon relied on public transportation to commute to work in Moss Vale, Mittagong and Bowral schools, and TAFE campuses.

His daily routine was gruelling – he would wake up at 2:30am to catch a train from Goulburn to the Southern Highlands, starting work from 5am to 9am.

Between shifts, he spent time at the local library until his afternoon shift from 2pm to 6pm, after which he would return to Goulburn around 7pm, keeping this schedule five days a week.

The Workskills Employment Consultant (EC) was concerned about Jon’s welfare, but he always expressed his willingness to endure the long commute to maintain his job.

After discussing these concerns with Jon, the EC contacted his supervisor at Joss to explore the possibility of transferring him to a position in Goulburn.

This process was lengthy, with initial responses from the supervisor and Joss Group’s head office indicating there were no current vacancies in Goulburn and they needed Jon in the Mittagong area due to staffing shortages.

However, the EC persisted in liaising with the company until a transfer was finally arranged, allowing Jon to work in Goulburn.

Though initially told he might only receive casual hours due to the district change, Jon began working at TAFE Goulburn, where he also secured accommodation.

This change made Jon less tired, which helped him to work well with other staff. Jon regularly communicated with his EC, emailing 3-4 times weekly and calling frequently.

The EC found that Jon primarily needed someone to share his thoughts and address any issues that arose.

When Jon reached the 52-week mark, the EC discussed the possibility of ongoing support, which Jon happily accepted. Jon continues to maintain regular contact with the EC, reaching out by phone or email whenever issues arise.

Feedback from Joss Area Manager Tim Wilson and Supervisor Steve Djuric has been overwhelmingly positive – they think highly of Jon and regard him as an excellent worker.

The EC has also observed Jon to be very polite, hardworking, and willing to help anyone due to his kind heart.
