Taster days give students experience with work options

Illawarra Vocational Services Team Member

The Disability Trust’s Illawarra Vocational Services and The Plant Room café have been playing host to a selection of students from The Holy Spirit College.

Nine students aged 16-18 have been part of workplace taster days at The Disability Trust’s office at Spring Hill.

Once a fortnight over the past couple of months, this opportunity has given these young people a chance to learn and grow, as they work towards completing their high school studies before joining the workforce.

The students spent half a day in the kitchen, cooking a variety of dishes, including nachos, chicken burgers, pasta and roast vegetables.

 

 

And they would also get time in the outdoors, involving themselves in activities such as woodwork, gardening, mowing and painting.

The students were very supportive and encouraged each other throughout the whole process.

They were all able to see what working life may be like as they got a taste of different roles in a welcoming environment.
