School Leavers: Ready For The Next Big Adventure

Leaving school after year 12 is a daunting prospect for any student, so The Disability Trust works with participants and their families to make the transition into life beyond the school gates as smooth as possible, while also empowering them to make informed decisions about their future.

There are a range of options for school leavers with a disability, but it’s important to ensure that supports are considered and put in place ahead of the leaving date, including changes to NDIS plans.

For The Disability Trust, the process of ‘leaving school’ begins in February with a review of year 11 and 12 students currently accessing our services. The first step for participants and their families is to gather information on the choices available. You may want to visit an Expo, and visit sites near you that offer post-school options. We can help by working with schools and providing information for plan reviews and service agreements, all of which can help to make this significant life change into a positive experience.

We offer a range of options for school leavers.

Some will have opted for School Leaver Employment Supports (SLES), and will be working with our team to find employment and/or training that best matches their strengths, interests and goals. Our hugely successful Disability Employment Service helps people find gainful, worthwhile and satisfying employment in the community. The service operates in the Illawarra, Shoalhaven, Mittagong, Goulburn, Bega, Cooma and Batemans Bay.

For those who are moving from school into Day Programs, Club Trust provides activities, support and developmental training that includes skill development in independent living, social living and healthy living. Participants attend three to five days each week, and are involved in life skills development activities such as cooking, shopping and communication. There are also regular day trips for activities that can include swimming and horse riding.

Whatever option is right for you, we can help you to get everything in place to make the next big adventure into an exciting and positive experience.

Further information on each of these opportunities can be found on the following pages of our website.
