Statement on Psychotropic Medication

The Disability Trust support the Royal Commission’s findings that ‘psychotropic medicines are being misused and overused, particularly with older people and people with disability. Inappropriate use of psychotropic medicines has been recognised as a safety and quality issue in health care.’

The Disability Trust supports the principles of both the Joint Statement on the Inappropriate Use of Psychotropic Medicines to Manage the Behaviours of People with Disability and Older People and STOPMOZ.

The Disability Trust is committed to improving outcomes and quality of life for people with a disability and to reduce the use of authorised and unauthorised restrictive practices including chemical restraint.

The Disability Trust will continue to work with individuals and their families, sector partners and health professionals to raise awareness and provide education about the impact of psychotropic medications.

The Disability Trust will work with our teams and provide education to ensure that staff who are supporting individuals understand the impact of long terms use of psychotropic medications and feel empowered to support individuals to seek review, of medication and alternate options where possible.
