Rowan cleaning up in his career with help from Workskills

Workskills is a free service helping people with disability, injury or illness to find a job and remain in meaningful employment.

Rowan is one of the many success stories who has found a job that suits him down to the ground.

He has been employed as a cleaner for two years at a school in Nowra and is flourishing in his role.

Rowan’s previous job meant that he finished late at night and he was hoping to find employment during daylight hours and The Disability Trust’s Workskills staff in the Shoalhaven were able to find the right job for him.

“I was like ‘I’ll take it and see how I go’ and it led to me being here for about two years now,” he said.

“I’ve learned a lot of cleaning skills like mopping, vacuuming, blowing, cleaning windows and also a lot of time management skills.

“I get home at a decent time, I used to finish at midnight.

“My favourite part about working here is getting school holidays off,” he added with a cheeky grin.

Rowan takes great pride in ensuring the school’s classrooms, library and other facilities are as clean as possible.

Chloe Lenihan, a Senior Employment Consultant with The Disability Trust, said Rowan deserved plenty of credit for the way he has used the guidance from Workskills to shine in his important role.

“Workskills is a disability employment agency helping people living with disability or a mental health issue find meaningful employment,” she said.

“We help with things such as work clothing, training courses, fuel vouchers to get to work, job searching, marketing. Anything to do with work, we’re going to help you with.

“We helped Rowan find this position that he’s loving so much. We’ve helped him with training courses, haircuts, presentation wise, work uniform and boots, anything he needs for work.”

The Workskills staff conduct regular check-ins with their clients before and after they find employment so that the process is as smooth as possible for them and their employers.

“We have clients in hospitality, retail, construction, labouring, truck drivers, forklift drivers, even teachers. All sorts. We’ve had a lot of experience with all types of industry,” Chloe added.

Workskills is a disability employment service provider across the IllawarraShoalhaven, and Southern Highlands with offices in Fairy Meadow, Wollongong, Warrawong, Shellharbour, Nowra, Mittagong and Goulburn.
