Australia Day Diversity and Inclusion Award 2020

The Disability Trust was thrilled to receive recognition for the Strangeways Theatre Group at the Australia Day Awards Dinner. The Strangeways Theatre Group is run in partnership between The Disability Trust and Merrigong Theatre Company.

The Strangeways Ensemble is a Wollongong-based professional theatre collaborative that is made up of performers who are perceived to have intellectual disability. The ensemble has been performing together since 2014 with their first show titled The Man Who Dreamt The Stars. They followed this with their second production in 2017, The Outside Man. The Strangeways Theatre Group has been busy putting the finishing touches on their new production Trash Talk, a bittersweet, original and innovative show created and performed by Wollongong’s only professional theatre company, Strangeways Ensemble at Illawarra Performing Arts Centre. Trash Talk played at IPAC from January 29 to February 2 before opening at Sydney’s Riverside Theatres on February 14, 2020.

Ryan Kiddle, Senior Manager with The Disability Trust shared the excitement of the acknowledgement of the award and thanked the Merrigong Theatre Company for their amazing ongoing support and guidance of the participants from The Trust in devising, staging and performing these successful plays.
