Artists Sue Ellen Yates and Yasmin Threadgate are leading a wonderful Community Art Project to transform the Palmer Street toilet block in Merimbula after responding to a council tender for a mural. Working on behalf of The Disability Trust, Sue Ellen has created a stunning mural design and is working with our service users and other members of the community to fill the walls with colour.
“We’ve had people in wheelchairs, people with autism and just people who have stopped and got involved say how much they have enjoyed it,” Sue Ellen said.
They have made potato stamps with fish and leaves on for anyone unable to hold a brush.
“One lady with a disability came by and said she had lost her mum in the last week and used to do art with her so she painted a spot for her mum; it was really lovely,” Sue Ellen said.
The design has a mixture of local flora and fauna in it. It’s where the ocean and the lake meet the hills of the coast,” she said.
The Disability Trust is providing the materials and the artists are working with support from the Merimbula Chamber of Commerce and council and I think you’ll agree it is looking fantastic! Congratulations to all the contributing artists!
